Pepper: All Access
Pepper, Stick Figure & Slightly Stoopid at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island
August 12, 2018
It was my first 311 cruise in 2011 and I fell in love with the Kona band Pepper. These guys were goofy, lively and talented. I am a person who feeds off energy and when a band can deliver 1,000% for an entire set it stays with me. I jump at the chance to shoot them any time they are in town; this time I was offered an all-access pass. This was uncharted territory that both excited me and shook up my nerves. Ultimately, it was an experience that I won’t forget.
Challenges: figuring out what the F all-access entailed. I watched other photographers as they roamed backstage, trying to figure out where I could and couldn’t go. Only once (during Slightly Stoopid) was I pulled back as they were stricter about the areas we could shoot. The sound techs were helpful, one even giving me a heads up about a ‘bass throw.’ Little did he know I didn’t know what that meant. I had my wrong camera/lens in hand and missed it almost entirely. But if there is a next time, I will be ready.
